Take Us Back
By Sophie Trieste
Ageing bodies, ageing minds
Let us please go back in time
Flying off swings and rollercoaster rides
Take me back to that time
Fall on the ground
Wipe the tears from my face
Put a band-aid on my scrape
Make me laugh to forget the ache
Take an adult fall
Let’s walk it off
Get back up
Take care of yourself
Fail as a child
We’re told “it’s okay, you’ll do better next time”
“No worries, we believe in you”
Fail as an adult
We’re told “do better”
“We expect more from you”
Ageing bodies, ageing minds
No time for brain freeze from ice cream or slushies
We’ve got a calorie count to keep
No more chasing pigeons through the streets of town
“That’s embarrassing, you’re not a child!”
We age in body
We age in mind
Oh please take me back
To that joyful childhood time.
