To Annabel

By Sophie Trieste

To Annabel,

I called you one night
Crying over a tough life
Not sure what would come from it
I called just to be heard

I called you one night
Crying over a rough time
But you morphed my brittle tears
Into soft laughs
You washed out my worries
Settled my sorrow
Replaced it with relief
A temporary peace

I called you one night
Crying over an empty month
Hanging up the call,
I could tell for certain, I felt free—
Free of what once caged my heart
And stirred my tears

On this August day,
I can tell you one thing right now,
Part of me will always be with you
One year ago, you were just a girl I met in college
Revising the story of my summer, you became more
You became my soul sister
Be my bridesmaid, be the aunt to my future kids, be my best friend
